Nurses have contributed immensely to the growth and reformation of the healthcare system. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2011) ascertains that challenges that these professionals faced in the past, such as low participation in health research and policymaking, deterred the growth of the nursing profession. Therefore, it was necessary to develop recommendations that could guarantee active participation of nurses in changes that occurred in the health healthcare system. After the IOM had provided various guidelines covering nursing education, practice, and leadership, Altman, Butler, and Shern (2016) assessed the progress of the report. Thus, it is important to discuss the impact of the IOM report, which can enable nurses to understand the peculiarities of the profession.

The Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Education

The IOM report has made a significant contribution to the advancement of nursing education. Altman et al. (2016) indicate that nurses have enrolled in various institutions to advance their studies. Others have participated in various courses, such as leadership, to enhance their specialization in different fields. Additionally, many nurses have engaged in life-long learning that has seen them acquire terminal degrees, such as Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Altman et al. (2016) further compare figures that provide a clear picture of the growth of nursing education. For instance, they indicate that in 2010, 147,935 students enrolled in the baccalaureate program (Altman et al., 2016, p. 5). However, in 2014, the number increased to 172, 794. Furthermore, the amount of nurses aiming to advance from a RN to a BSN rose from 77,239 in 2010 to 130,345 in 2014. Moreover, in 2010, 7,034 nurses enrolled in DNP programs. However, in 2014, the number rose to 18, 352. The increase in baccalaureate, DNP, and Ph.D. admissions indicates that the IOM report has improved nursing education. Besides, the number of schools that train nurses has increased (Altman et al., 2016). Therefore, the IOM report is necessary for the growth of nursing education.

The Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Practice

Nursing practice has also improved after the recommendations issued by the IOM (2011). It recognized barriers that nurses encountered in nursing practice and recommended that they should utilize their education entirely in practice to warrant an improvement in the nursing profession. Altman et al. (2016) indicate that by 2010, only 13 states had guaranteed nurses full practice. However, currently, eight more states have allowed nurses to practice fully according to the standards of their educational achievements. This improvement is significant for primary care, considering that nurses form the largest segment of the healthcare workforce in primary care and can discharge their duties fully in these settings (Altman et al., 2016). Besides, Altman et al. (2016) indicate that currently, various states, including Maryland and Minnesota, have allowed nurses to implement all functions that are within their scope of practice independently. Accordingly, these healthcare professionals have immense opportunities to discharge their duties independently to improve primary care.

Changing Practice to Meet IOM Report Goals

To meet the goals of the report by the IOM (2011), I can collaborate with fellow nurses, doctors, and allied professionals to enhance the provision of nursing services. According to Altman et al. (2016), effective nursing care cannot be without collaboration. In my current practice, I do not collaborate efficiently with inter-professional teams. Therefore, besides practicing fully and within my scope of practice, I should recognize that other members in my healthcare environment have immense experience in patient care. Therefore, I can consult them continuously and promote the spirit of teamwork to facilitate efficient nursing practice.

Then, I can research the current evidence on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and then apply it in my practice to ensure that I provide quality and affordable nursing care in the healthcare environment. The IOM (2011) indicates that nurses should translate research into practice. However, the latter remains a challenge in my healthcare environment. Indeed, Joo and Huber (2014) agree that utilizing evidence-based practice increases the affordability and quality of health services. Therefore, I can use the approach to enhance nursing care in my healthcare environment, improve service delivery in primary care and to meet the goals of the IOM report.

The Impact of the IOM Report on the Nurse’s Leadership Role

The IOM report further recognizes the significance of nursing leadership. Accordingly, it recommends enhancing collaborative efforts and nursing leadership roles in the healthcare system (IOM, 2011). Altman et al. (2016) explain that currently nursing professionals have improved their educational achievements that have seen them expand their opportunities to lead various collaborative efforts in health care. Additionally, Altman et al. (2016) indicate that current nurse leaders that have benefited from the IOM recommendations are pushing for the achievement of the IOM report goals by mobilizing other nurses to embrace the guidelines. Further, Reinhard and Hassmiller (2012) explain the IOM recommendations and ascertain that leadership should not be limited to clinical settings. Accordingly, nurse leaders have participated in ensuring funding and progress of healthcare delivery (Altman et al., 2016). Therefore, the IOM recommendations have diversified the role of nurses as leaders, which can see them contribute immensely to the transformation of the healthcare system as a whole.


The Institute of Medicine report has contributed significantly to the growth of the nursing profession in various aspects. Nurses have applied the recommendations, particularly in education, leadership, and practice. It has resulted in an increase in their enrollment in different institutions to acquire and advance their nursing education. Increased knowledge has also led to the diversification of nursing leadership roles. Despite the significance of the recommendations, inter-professional collaboration and evidence-based practice remain a challenge in healthcare settings. Nurses should examine the two approaches and apply them efficiently to facilitate the achievement of the IOM report goals.
